Madison-on-the-Lake is a village located along the shores of Lake Erie in northeastern Ohio. The population of the town is about 3,000. Also called "Madison," the community was settled in the early 1800s as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve for those who lost their homes during the Revolutionary War. Early on, Madison's major industries were in bog iron and iron works. Shipbuilding also flourished from about 1828 to 1863. When the iron business ended, the lakefront community became a popular summer resort area, especially with the arrival of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad. This is when the small town became more widely recognized as "Madison-on-the-Lake." Today, the downtown area is nestled around a traditional New England Park Square. The row of buildings at the village center and an additional twenty-eight buildings and sites in Madison-on-the-Lake are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town also makes a quiet retreat for exploring the whole city of Cincinnati and its' waterfront. Nearby attractions include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, the National Underground Railroad Museum, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal. The latter is one of the top cultural attractions in the nation and houses the Cincinnati History Museum, and the Museum of Natural History & Science.
