Gallipolis is a village located along the Ohio River in southeast Ohio. The population of the town is approximately 4,100. The village of Gallipolis was settled in 1790 by French aristocrats known as the "French Five Hundred." The promise of a new life in America fell short when the settlers arrived however. It was not the "land of milk and honey" they'd been promised by members of the Scioto Company who had talked them into purchasing the land. The disillusioned settlers petitioned President George Washington for aid and in 1803 Gallia County was established (named in honor of the Gauls.) A large influx of Welsh people arrived in the early 1800s and the little village prospered. The town of Gallipolis gained national notoriety in the late 1960s when the Silver Bridge collapsed, which spanned the Ohio River from the town to Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Other attractions in Gallipolis include the Ariel-Ann Carson Dater Performing Arts Centre, home of the Ohio Symphony, and the French Art Colony, a regional multi-arts center. Gallipolis is also the site of Bob Evans Farms, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Our House Museum is a historic, brick Federal-style tavern built in 1819. The restored inn and tavern contains period furnishings and a display of early Americana.
