Athens is a historic college town, home to Ohio University, located along the Hocking River in southeast Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,832, with an additional population of about 22,000 students. Although not incorporated until 1811, Ohio University was chartered in 1804 and thus became the first public institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory. Athens is one of the most progressive cities in southeastern Ohio, with a long history of arts and touring musicians who perform at Ohio University and at festivals in Athens. Attractions include the Diary Barn Arts Center, the Kennedy Museum of Art at Ohio University, the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery and the Athens County Historical Museum. Folklore runs deep in the community. Centuries old buildings and cemeteries, along with a decommissioned asylum has helped inspire it to be named one of the "fifteen most haunted cities in America" on the Fox Family Channel special "Scariest Places on Earth." For outdoor recreation, the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is a multi-use trail that extends 16.4 miles northwest along the Hocking River. Strouds Run State Park borders the city line and consists of 2,606 acres of wooded hills, bluffs and rock shelters, centered around a lake. There are several other trails and state parks in the vicinity. The city of Athens hosts dozens of special events and festivals each year. Just a sampling includes the Athens Community Music Festival, the Hockhocking Folk Festival, the Pawpaw Festival, the Annual Halloween Bash and the Athens International Film and Video Festival.

Athens Weather & Climate

Southeast Ohio has a distinct four-season climate. This region is located in the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau, surrounded by hills and river valley. Summers in southeast Ohio are warm and humid. Temperatures are slightly warmer in this region than in northern Ohio, although milder in the eastern highlands. The growing season is also longer here than the rest of the state.
