Hillsboro
is a small town located in Highland County in southwest Ohio. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,605 residents. The town is most well-known for being home to Rocky Fork State Park. The park includes a 2,080-acre lake, natural wetlands, a scenic gorge and dolomite caves. Activities include boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, picnicking, camping, volleyball, and disc golf. The campgrounds at Rocky Fork State Park offer 171 campsites for tents and trailers, set at the northwest corner of the lake. There's a beach and camp store in the campgrounds, showers, laundry facilities, and camp store and pets are permitted on all sites. A miniature golf course and basketball courts are also available in the campground. There are two swimming beaches at Rocky Fork and the lake is stocked with bluegill, bass, crappie, saugeye, white bass and catfish. The hiking trails are easy to moderate and picnic areas are located on the north and east shores overlooking the lake. Other attractions near the town of Hillsboro include Fort Hill, which is a complex of Hopewell Indian mounds that are more than 1,000 years old and Serpent Mound, which is considered one of the most spectacular prehistoric Indian mounds in the country. The Adena State Memorial is a museum that includes the restored 1807 mansion of Thomas Worthington.

Southwest Ohio's climate features hot, muggy summers and cold winters. It lies in a climatic transition zone at the northern edge of the humid subtropical climate and the southern edge of the humid continental climate. Summers see significant rainfall, with July being the warmest month. The comfort index for southwest Ohio, based on humidity during the summer, is 46 out of 100 (with a higher number being more comfortable.) Winters are cold and snowy, although this area of the state receives less snow than the northeast snowbelt region. Spring is mild with unpredictable weather. Autumn is the sunniest season with cool nights and pleasant daytime temperatures. Extreme weather is a possibility in the form of severe thunderstorms, floods, ice storms and blizzards.
