Lima is a historic railroad town and county seat of Allen County in northwest Ohio. It lies along Interstate 75 about 78 miles south of the city of Toledo. As of the 2010 census, the population of Lima was 38,771 residents. The town of Lima was founded in 1831 and has been a railroad and industrial/manufacturing town ever since. In the early days, it was defined by it's connection to railroading, being an important Midwestern hub and home to the Lima Locomotive Works, whose name was known world-wide. Lima today is a vibrant, quintessential blue-collar Ohio city. It's home to Ohio State University Lima Campus. The city includes a historic district and twenty-four buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Among the buildings are the Allen County Courthouse, the old post office, the Hotel Argonne and the Neal Clothing Building. The Lima Locomotive Works began in 1869 and built its' first narrow-guage steam locomotive in 1878. That same year the company worked on a geared locomotive designed by Michigan lumberman, Ephraim Shay. The well-known Shay Locomotive was built for steep grades, heavy loads and sharp right turns. In 1881, Shay granted Lima Locomotive Works exclusive rights to manufacture his locomotives that eventually were sent to 48 U.S. states and 24 foreign countries. As of 2005, some of these engines were still in use after 100 years. The Loco Works, as it was called, also built the Chesapeake and Ohio 2-6-6-6, one of the largest locomotives ever built in the world. The plant closed permanently in 1981 and today the Lima Locomotive Works plant is run down and razed - a mere ghost of what it once was in its heyday.
