Hocking-Hills
is a popular state park in the Allegheny Plateau Region of southeast Ohio. This scenic area features cliffs, gorges, rock shelters and waterfalls. The state park is surrounded by the Hocking State Forest. The 2,356-acre Hocking Hills State Park is divided into five separate sections; Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs and Rock House. Old Man's Cave is a narrow, deep gorge with waterfalls; Cedar Falls is a larger waterfalls located south of Old Man's Cave; Ash Cave is a large rock shelter with a smaller waterfall; Cantwell Cliffs is a broad gorge with a unique stone stairway; and Rock House is a cliffed area with a broad rock shelter. There is evidence in the Hocking Hills of the ancient Adena culture having used the caves and recesses more than 7,000 years ago. The Wyandot, Delaware and Shawnee Indian tribes lived in the area in the mid-1700s, and their name for the river in the park "Hockhocking" is where the park gets its' name. There are 9 hiking trails in Hocking Hills State Park that range from easy to difficult. Most trails, however, are considered "moderate." Portions of the Buckeye Trail also goes through the park and state forest. There are five picnic areas, one in each of the separate areas mentioned above. Other things to do include horseback riding, canoeing, wildlife viewing and scenic drives. The area surrounding the park is filled with small towns, museums, craft shops and antique shops. Also nearby is Conkles Hollow, a state nature preserve that features scenic geologic formations and rare plants.

Hocking Hills Weather & Climate

Southeast Ohio has a distinct four-season climate. This region is located in the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau, surrounded by hills and river valley. Summers in southeast Ohio are warm and humid. Temperatures are slightly warmer in this region than in northern Ohio, although milder in the eastern highlands. The growing season is also longer here than the rest of the state. More than half of the precipitation occurs from May to October. Winters in southern Ohio are cool to cold. Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Blizzards, ice storms and freezing rain are all a possibility, although there are also often mild periods during winter. Spring has a mix of weather, from sunny and mild to cool and rainy. Autumn is the sunniest season of the year with mild days and crisp, cool evenings.
