Circleville
is located in Pickaway County in south-central Ohio. As of 2010, the population was 13,314 residents. The city of Circleville was founded in 1810 and built upon a circular portion of a large Hopewell Indian earthworks. The town is most well-known for being home to the annual Circleville Pumpkin Show, a tradition for over 100 years. The festival begins the 3rd Wednesday of October and lasts for four days. It's billed as "The Greatest Free Show on Earth" for its' free attendance, and draws some 400,000 visitors each year. Events at the show include a weigh-in of the largest pumpkins brought in from farmers around the area. The largest pumpkin to date was grown by Bob & Jo Liggett, weighing in at 1,635 pounds. A "world's largest pumpkin pie" is also a yearly attraction, with people standing in line for over an hour to view it. Other features of the pumpkin show include the crowning of the Miss Pumpkin Show Queen and Little Miss Pumpkin Show Queen, a Parade of Bands, arts and crafts, games, rides, and of course, lots of food including pumpkin pie. This fun, family street fair began in 1903 when then Mayor of Circleville, George R. Haswell, held a small pumpkin exhibit in front of his home on West Main Street. He set up corn fodder and pumpkins, some cut into Jack-O-Lanterns and other decorations. The next year, he was joined by other neighborhood merchants and slowly interest in the exhibits grew. In 1905, the first merry-go-round was set up on the corner of Main and Scioto Streets and the Circleville Pumpkin show was born.

South-central Ohio has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. This region is considered part of the Appalachian foothills. Summers are warm, sometimes hot. The comfort index for southern Ohio, based on humidity during the summer, is 46 out of 100 (with a higher number being more comfortable.) Summers are slightly warmer in this region than in northern Ohio and it has a longer growing season. Severe thunderstorms in the summer are possible, often resulting in a break in the humidity. Winters are cold and snowfall varies from year to year. Autumn generally has the best weather in southern Ohio, with sunny, mild days and crisp, cool evenings. Tornadoes are a possibility in late spring and summer, although they don't occur as often here as in other parts of the U.S.
