Zoar is a village with a very interesting past, located in Tuscarawas County in northeast Ohio. The population is about 200 residents. Zoar was founded in 1817 by a group of German Separatists seeking freedom from religious persecution in their homeland. Called "The Society of Separatists of Zoar," this communal society thrived in Zoar for over 80 years. Ten of the German-style architecture structures have been restored and are part of the Zoar Village State Memorial. The Separatists emigrated from Wurttemberg in southeastern Germany. The leader of the society was named Joseph Bimeler, a charismatic man who led the village through many hard times. He died in 1853, and the village saw a slow decline, until the communal society finally voted to disband in 1898. The Historical Zoar Village State Memorial is open for tours Wednesday through Sunday. Also to see in Zoar is a flower garden based on the Book of Revelation. The garden features a towering tree in the middle representing Christ and other elements surrounding it represent other elements. Special events in the village include an annual Harvest Festival and Christmas in Zoar. There is some question as to the future of the village, due to a levee on the Tuscarawas River that has been given the lowest possible rating by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. One of many alternatives under consideration could require the relocation or demolition of 80 percent of Zoar. A grassroots campaign is underway to save this historic village.

Zoar Weather & Climate

Northeast Ohio has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, winters are cold and snowy. Spring is unpredictable and autumn is sunny and mild. You can expect almost any type of weather in Northeast Ohio - severe thunderstorms in summer, tornadoes, blizzards and other winter ice storms may occur from time to time. It's definitely a good idea to check ahead if you're traveling to Ohio, as weather here is changeable. In general, however, the warmest month is July and the coldest month is January. The maximum rain usually occurs in June. Some years see blizzards and huge accumulations of snow, while other years the ground may be covered only 2 or 3 times. Autumn is usually the best time of year with warm to mild days and cool nights.
