Newark
is a city located in central Ohio, approximately 33 miles east of Columbus. As of the 2010 census, the population was 47,573. There are several interesting attractions in Newark. More than 2,000 years ago, the Newark area was home to the people of the Hopewell culture, who built many earthen mounds and enclosures in the area. The Newark Earthworks includes three sections; the Great Circle Earthworks, the Octagon Earthworks and the Wright Earthworks. This complex of mounds covers 206 acres and is a designated National Historic Landmark, preserved as a state park by the Ohio Historical Society. It's one of the largest earthen mounds networks in the world. The Octagon alone is large enough to contain four Roman Coliseums. The Observatory Circle is large enough to hold the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Newark Circle is the largest circular earthwork in the Americas. Eight-feet high walls surround a five-foot deep moat around the Newark Circle. In addition, there are remains of a road leading south from the Octagon called the "Great Hopewell Road," that has been well explored and documented. Other attractions in Newark include the Dawes Arboretum, the National Heisey Glass Museum, the Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve and Ye Olde Mill Velvet Ice Cream Company.
