Catawba-Island
is not an island at all, but an area of the Ottawa County peninsula along the western shore of Lake Erie in Ohio. It's sometimes also referred to simply as Catawba. It's one of twelve townships that make up Ottawa County, Ohio and is mainly residential with many condos, upscale homes, marinas and a few businesses. Catawba Island has easy access to Lake Erie with many sheltered bays and inlets. It's reached from SR 53 exit off of SR 2 or from Sand Road off SR 2. Both of these roads meet at Catawba Point, making a scenic loop around the peninsula. Activities in the area include swimming, boating, sailing, fishing, hiking, biking, picnicking and camping. Catawba Island is just minutes to the village of Marblehead and the Marblehead Lighthouse. Other attractions in the area include the Lake Erie islands of Put-in-Bay and Kellys Island and the Chautauqua community of Lakeside. Nearby Port Clinton has lots of shopping and restaurant choices, and the village of Marblehead features quaint shops and art galleries. Catawba Island State Park is also located here and features a fishing pier, picnic shelters, boat launch ramps, ice skating and ice fishing access in wintertime. East Harbor State Park is just a short drive from Catawba and offers the largest campground in the Ohio Parks system, seven miles of beaches, picnicking, hiking trails, fishing access and a full-service marina.

Catawba Island Weather & Climate

Northwest Ohio, along Lake Erie, experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. Lake Erie moderates the climate somewhat, especially in late spring and fall. This effect is lessened in the winter when Lake Erie freezes over (unlike the other Great Lakes.) Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility, especially in spring and summer. Summers are warm and humid. Southerly and westerly winds combined with warm surface waters of Lake Erie in summer negate the lake's cooling ability on the area, plus the lake's presence increases humidity. Autumn is the sunniest time of the year in this region, with mild days and cool nights. A jacket is recommended for fall evenings that can dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
