Marblehead
is a village in northwestern Ohio, located at the tip of a peninsula that stretches into Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay. The permanent population is approximately 1,000, but increases during the summer months with tourists and part-time summer residents. Incorporated in 1891, Marblehead is a true slice of Americana, with its picturesque setting, quaint shops, and small-town friendliness. Ferry service is available to the nearby Lake Erie islands, which feature natural wonders like underground crystal caves and limestone glacial grooves. The area is known for its walleye fishing, and other activities include boating, sailing, hiking, biking, picnicking, and camping. The most well-known attraction in the village is Marblehead Lighthouse, situated on the very tip of the peninsula at the entrance to Sandusky Bay. Built in 1821, it's the oldest, continuously-operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes, and has guided mariners through the stormy waters of Lake Erie for centuries. The site of the lighthouse is now a state park, and tours of the keeper's house and lighthouse are given during the summer months. Visitors can climb the 77 steps to the top of the lighthouse for a thrilling view of the lake and surrounding area. Marblehead is also just a short drive to the village of Lakeside, which is one of the few remaining Chautauqua towns in the United States. Amusement park aficionados wont want to miss Cedar Point, one of country's most popular amusement parks, located approximately 25 miles away in the town of Sandusky.

Marblehead Weather & Climate

Northwest Ohio, along Lake Erie, experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. Lake Erie moderates the climate somewhat, especially in late spring and fall. This effect is lessened in the winter when Lake Erie freezes over (unlike the other Great Lakes.) Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility, especially in spring and summer. Summers are warm and humid. Southerly and westerly winds combined with warm surface waters of Lake Erie in summer negate the lake's cooling ability on the area, plus the lake's presence increases humidity. Autumn is the sunniest time of the year in this region, with mild days and cool nights. A jacket is recommended for fall evenings that can dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
