Lakeside
is one of the last remaining active Chautauqua communities in the United States. It's located in northwest Ohio on the shores of Lake Erie. Chautauqua communities flourished in the U.S. during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and Lakeside was one of the very first. The movement began in 1875 when Ohio manufacturer Lewis Miller, and John Heyl Vincent, a Methodist minister, founded the Chautauqua Institution in New York. Their idea was to form faith-based summer resorts that offered both religious and educational opportunities. Assemblies also sometimes traveled from town to town and brought preachers, entertainers, and speakers. President Theodore Roosevelt is quoted as saying that Chautauqua was "the most American thing in America." Today, Lakeside is a gated community from the end of June through Labor Day. Visitors must pay a gate fee, which is used for maintenance and improvements to the town. The community offers Christian-themed activities and worship, movies, theater and tours of historic homes. Recreational opportunities include 26 shuffleboard courts, tennis courts, miniature golf, fishing, swimming, kayaking and sailing. The community is mostly residential, but does have a few stores and restaurants. Lakeside holds true to the Chautauqua Movement and their mission is To enrich the quality of life for all people, to foster traditional Christian values and nurture relationships through opportunities for renewal and growth...spiritually, intellectually, culturally and physically.

Northwest Ohio, along Lake Erie, experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. Lake Erie moderates the climate somewhat, especially in late spring and fall. This effect is lessened in the winter when Lake Erie freezes over (unlike the other Great Lakes.) Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility, especially in spring and summer. Summers are warm and humid. Southerly and westerly winds combined with warm surface waters of Lake Erie in summer negate the lake's cooling ability on the area, plus the lake's presence increases humidity. Autumn is the sunniest time of the year in this region, with mild days and cool nights. A jacket is recommended for fall evenings that can dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
