Put-in-Bay
is a village located on the tiny two-by-four-mile South Bass Island in Lake Erie, Ottawa County, Ohio. The population is 200 full-time residents. The island itself is most commonly referred to as "Put-in-Bay." There are a couple of explanations for the unique name. Some say it comes from Native Americans who would "put in at the bay" on their journey across Lake Erie. Others say it comes from early maps of the island that shows the harbor being named "Pudding Bay." For over 100 years, Put-in-Bay has been an island resort and popular tourist destination, reached by ferry from the nearby towns of Port Clinton and Marblehead. Activities on the island include a narrated tour, charter fishing, golf, helicopter and biplane rides, boating, sailing, swimming, hiking, miniature golf, parasailing, go-kart racing, kayaking, jet skiing and gem mining. For such a tiny island, Put-in-Bay is big on attractions. Visit Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, the tallest open-air observatory in the United States. At 352 feet, the observatory on top of the monument gives a 360-degree view of the lake, surrounding islands and mainland. Crystal Cave, home to the world's largest recorded geode is located directly beneath Heineman Winery. This cave also features celestite crystals and was discovered by workers digging a well for the winery in 1897. Other places to visit on Put-in-Bay include the Butterfly House, Antique Car Museum, Aquatic Resource Center, Lake Erie Islands Historical Museum, Stonehenge Historic Home Tour and Perry's Cave and Underground Lake.

Northwest Ohio, along Lake Erie, experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. Lake Erie moderates the climate somewhat, especially in late spring and fall. This effect is lessened in the winter when Lake Erie freezes over (unlike the other Great Lakes.) Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility, especially in spring and summer. Summers are warm and humid. Southerly and westerly winds combined with warm surface waters of Lake Erie in summer negate the lake's cooling ability on the area, plus the lake's presence increases humidity. Autumn is the sunniest time of the year in this region, with mild days and cool nights. A jacket is recommended for fall evenings that can dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
