Port-Clinton
is a lakeside village located in northwest Ohio on the shores of Lake Erie. Known as the "Walleye Capital of the World," the town is known for its pier and shore fishing, as well as charter boat rentals. As of the 2010 census, the population of Port Clinton was 6,056. The old-fashioned downtown area is home to specialty shops, restaurants, a popcorn factory, and other local businesses. You can walk along the dock and watch the fishing boats, or climb aboard a hydrojet catamaran, which zips you to and from the Lake Erie islands of "Put-in-Bay" and Kellys Island. Port Clinton is situated at the junction of two migratory flyways, which makes it of the best bird watching areas in the country. Other outdoor recreational activities include swimming, hiking, biking, canoeing, camping and horseback riding. East Harbor State Park is located here, and has seven miles of sandy beach, picnic shelters, hiking trails, fishing, a full-service marina and the largest campground in the Ohio State Parks System. One of the major attractions near Port Clinton include Marblehead Lighthouse, which is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. The Port Clinton area also boasts wineries, an underground crystal cave, ferry boat rides, fine dining and history. If you're in the area during the holidays, don't miss the "Walleye Drop" on New Year's Eve, when a giant ceramic fish is dropped from the sky at the stroke of midnight.

Northwest Ohio, along Lake Erie, experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. Lake Erie moderates the climate somewhat, especially in late spring and fall. This effect is lessened in the winter when Lake Erie freezes over (unlike the other Great Lakes.) Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility, especially in spring and summer. Summers are warm and humid. Southerly and westerly winds combined with warm surface waters of Lake Erie in summer negate the lake's cooling ability on the area, plus the lake's presence increases humidity. Autumn is the sunniest time of the year in this region, with mild days and cool nights. A jacket is recommended for fall evenings that can dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
