Huron
is a pretty little Midwestern town located on the shores of Lake Erie in north-central Ohio. The population is approximately 8,000 residents. During the American Revolutionary War, residents who lost property due to raids by the British were offered land at the center of the "Firelands" region of the Connecticut Western Reserve. This land is what is now the town of Huron. One of the first settlers was John Baptiste Flemmond, who established a trading post on the east bank of the Huron River in 1792. The town of Huron was incorporated in 1809. It became a major ship-building town in the 1830s and an important port for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad in the 1880s. The port of Huron is still used today. In the latter part of the 20th century, Huron began an urban renewal project that included building a municipal marina called the Huron Boat Basin. This area has become a popular community park. Huron is also home to BGSU Firelands, which is a branch of Bowling Green State University. The Huron Playhouse, which is affiliated with the Bowling Green State University Department of Film and Theater, is Ohio's oldest continuing summer theater. Huron is a lovely place to live or visit, with its' scenic harbor filled with boats, white steepled churches, and Lake Erie shoreline.

Northwest Ohio, along Lake Erie, experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. Lake Erie moderates the climate somewhat, especially in late spring and fall. This effect is lessened in the winter when Lake Erie freezes over (unlike the other Great Lakes.) Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility, especially in spring and summer. Summers are warm and humid. Southerly and westerly winds combined with warm surface waters of Lake Erie in summer negate the lake's cooling ability on the area, plus the lake's presence increases humidity. Autumn is the sunniest time of the year in this region, with mild days and cool nights. A jacket is recommended for fall evenings that can dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
