Milan
is a small village located in Erie County in north-central Ohio. The population is approximately 1,500 residents. The village was an early canal town, with the construction of the Milan Canal beginning in 1833 and opening in 1839. The town sits along Lake Erie and the canal was directly connected to the lake. This put Milan in the position of being one of the busiest ports on Lake Erie for many years. On February 11, 1847, Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan, where he lived with his family until the age of 7 when they moved to Port Huron, Michigan. The small brick home where he was born is now a museum that is open February through November. It contains some of Edison's early inventions, documents and family mementos. Milan is a pretty town and retains the ambiance of a 19th century village. The village has a picturesque town square, many restored homes, several antique shops, restaurants and other businesses. The town's motto proclaims, "High quality of life in small town America," and this is exactly what you'll find in Milan. The village is host to an annual Melon Festival, usually held on Labor Day weekend. It brings more than 50,000 visitors each year, and features a parade, great food (melons, of course!) games, live entertainment and more.

Northwest Ohio, along Lake Erie, experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. Lake Erie moderates the climate somewhat, especially in late spring and fall. This effect is lessened in the winter when Lake Erie freezes over (unlike the other Great Lakes.) Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility, especially in spring and summer. Summers are warm and humid. Southerly and westerly winds combined with warm surface waters of Lake Erie in summer negate the lake's cooling ability on the area, plus the lake's presence increases humidity. Autumn is the sunniest time of the year in this region, with mild days and cool nights. A jacket is recommended for fall evenings that can dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
