Kelleys-Island
is the name of both an island and a village on the island in the western basin of Lake Erie. It's approximately four miles north of the village of Marblehead and 12 miles from Sandusky on the Ohio mainland. The island measures about four square miles and the village fully occupies the island. Kellys Island was originally inhabited by Native Americans and was used by the US Military in the War of 1812. Today, it has a permanent population of 367 (as of the 2000 census) and is a popular tourist destination. The island is reached by ferry from nearby Marblehead or Sandusky on the mainland. Once on Kellys Island, most people use bicycles, golf carts and motor scooters to get around (although the ferries will transport cars to the island, as well.) There are several public beaches on Kellys Island and activities include swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, biking, camping and scuba diving (there are several shipwrecks in the area.) Kellys Island is one of the best places in the country for birdwatching. This is because in spring and fall, migrating birds use the island as a "stepping-stone" to cross Lake Erie. The island has a diverse habitat and a variety of birds can be seen all year long. The island hosts the Nest With the Birds and Feathers and Foliage festivals each year. Kellys Island is also known for having the largest and most easily accessible remains of glacial grooves in the world. They can be seen on the northern side of the island, inside Kellys Island State Park.

Northwest Ohio, along Lake Erie, experiences a humid continental climate, characterized by four distinct seasons. Lake Erie moderates the climate somewhat, especially in late spring and fall. This effect is lessened in the winter when Lake Erie freezes over (unlike the other Great Lakes.) Snowfall varies greatly year to year. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility, especially in spring and summer. Summers are warm and humid. Southerly and westerly winds combined with warm surface waters of Lake Erie in summer negate the lake's cooling ability on the area, plus the lake's presence increases humidity. Autumn is the sunniest time of the year in this region, with mild days and cool nights. A jacket is recommended for fall evenings that can dip into the upper 30s to low 40s.
